Objective:
The California Space Education and Workforce Institute and California Space Authority’s New Space Professionals Working Group, together have created a new and innovative program called Aerospace Community Development Program. This program was designed to create a means for current aerospace professionals to attract young people to careers in aerospace and to enhance professional development for current aerospace employees. It aims to enhance the aerospace community for current aerospace professionals by providing this group with opportunities to enhance their professional development and take on leadership roles in the community. Visit the Aerospace Community Development page on the CSEWI homepage to see descriptions of all of the programs.
We have partnered with 3 universities, via their Mathematics Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) program, Manufacturing Engineering Potential (MEP) program, and the Center for Opportunities and Diversity in Engineering(CODE) to pilot our programs:
California State Polytechnic University Pomona
California State Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo
University of California Irvine
The Aerospace Community Development Program will consist of:
The California Space Enterprise Speakers Bureau: This provides current aerospace professionals a forum in which they can sign up to be "on-call" speakers. The professionals may be sent to classrooms, school events, and other activities to speak about their profession. Students benefit by getting information that may influence their career path, professionals benefit by developing their public speaking skills and giving back to the community.
The Mentor Match Program: Current aerospace professionals and university students are paired up using an on-line based e-matching website. The mentor and protege correspond via e-mail to discuss career related questions. This mentorship will raise the students' industry and innovation-oriented acumen prior to graduation, while establishing an industry mentorship link.
The New Space Professional Survey: This survey is aimed at understanding the influences and motivations of students and young professionals in the aerospace community in order to ascertain information on how to retain them in the industry.
The SPACE SPACE Blog: The Space Space blog propels space culture to a new height through creative and smart blogs. The series of blogs provides the opportunity for students and new space professionals to network and discuss areas of interest and importance to the aerospace industry for retention and recruitment efforts.
Desired Outcomes:
- To effectively communicate with and inspire youth to become actively involved in activities related to science, technology, mathematics, and engineering (STEM), and career and technical education (CTE).
- With the support of Corridor partners, identify, sponsor and feature designated CSEC programs on its website.
- Sponsor, feature content and provide outreach for web-based "participatory" STEM and CTE programs.
