Recommendations to Improve STEM Education in California
Objective: The Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Collaborative Action Plan (STEMCAP) project is designed to bring together a range of diverse stakeholders working on STEM issues. It will create a Plan envisioned as a handbook of best practices, model programs and content to be used by STEM practitioners, funders and supporters to advance the production of STEM students, graduates, teachers, professors, mentors, and to leverage resources from educational, academic, industrial and informal scientific sources.
The STEM Inventory is an on-line, user-friendly, searchable database of many California and national STEM programs organized by grade level, geography and topic and targeted to students, STEM practitioners, teachers and parents. It is envisioned as "the place" to go to research and find existing STEM programs. To showcase great programs, it will highlight best practices amongst STEM programs. It is also envisioned as a way to facilitate the development a "STEM community" - by having organizations and programs present at one place, organizers will know that they share a common goal with others around the nation. We hope the STEM Inventory connects the dots.

Structure: STEMCAP consists of a large, multi-disciplinary Steering Committee and three Working Groups (WGs). The "Recruitment" WG focuses on recruitment/retention of more STEM students, graduates, teachers, professors and mentors. The "Curriculum" WG focuses on shaping the academic courses/content to increase the relevance for industry and the future workforce. The "Transitions" WG focuses on creating seamless STEM-related strategies from elementary school to workforce entry for educators and students to transform the workforce. Desired Outcomes: - Develop a collaboration and a strategic action plan to increase the number and support the development of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) students, graduates, teachers, professors, and mentors within the California Innovation Corridor and the State of California, leveraging the resources and efforts not only of education and academia (K-20, public and private), but of industry and the informal science network.
