Recommendations to Improve STEM Education in California
STEM Collaborative Action Plan
Led by the CA Science and Workforce Institute (CSEWI), the goal of this project was to develop a collaboration and a strategic action plan to increase the number and support the development of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) students, graduates, teachers, professors and mentors within the California Innovation Corridor and the State of California, leveraging the resources and efforts not only of education and academia, but of industry and the informal science network. This common STEM vision became the focus around which stakeholders across the California Innovation Corridor united. A successfully implemented STEM Action Plan is viewed as foundational to achieving the overreaching WIRED intention to optimize the Corridor for innovation and 21st Century workforce competitiveness. The draft STEM Collaborative Action Plan (STEM CAP) was previewed and introduced to the full STEM CAP Steering Committee in the Spring 2008. The summer of 2008 saw the implementation of six pilot programs that attempted to address one or more specific STEM CAP recommendations. The executive summary of the final STEM CAP report references the common thread of engagement at the local level as an indicator of the program success.
STEM Inventory
CSEWI developed the STEM Inventory which is an on-line, user-friendly, searchable database of many California and national STEM programs organized by grade level, geography and topic. It is targeted to students, STEM practitioners, teachers and parents and is envisioned as "the place" to go to research and find existing STEM programs. It is also envisioned as a way to facilitate the development a "STEM community" - by having organizations and programs present at one place, organizers will know that they share a common goal with others around the nation. We hope the STEM Inventory connects the dots. The STEM Inventory can be viewed at www.steminventory.com CSEWI compiled and developed the STEM Inventory with over 300 active STEM entries. The STEM Inventory is a resource that educators, parents, transitioning workers, STEM program managers, and others can utilize by searching for programs by grade level, region, topic, funding and other categories.
Project Lead the Way
El Camino College's implementation of Project Lead the Way activities at seven high schools, ensured pre-engineering outreach to 800 students and successfully influenced both high school and community college students to consider pursuit of more math and science course work and possible consideration of STEM-related career paths.
Teacher Professional Institutes Analysis
Faculty of partner Cal Poly San Luis Obispo produced the first ever analysis of teacher professional development institutes in California describing the impact of the NASA teacher development program. The resultant white paper identifying the best practices of the institutes, identified the CSU/NASA JPL Institutes as the CSU system's most successful professional development models.
