Systems Engineering Resources Catalog and Introductory Videos
Objective:
Developed by The Aerospace Corp, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and CSEWI, the Systems Engineering Training project developed an outreach program to further educate existing engineers about Systems Engineering. To this end, companies throughout California were surveyed on their knowledge and use of Systems Engineering in their industry/company. As the survey showed, companies in many industries had little knowledge or little perceived need to understand this subject.
To increase the awareness and understanding of Systems Engineering, a course was designed called Basics of Systems Engineering. It was first held as a small 3-day class to test and evaluate the course, then held as a large 2-day seminar at the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus. At the end of the program, 100 professionals from different industries were recruited to participate in this course that introduced the subject overall along with some of the more focused disciplines of Systems Engineering, for example: Systems of Systems, Design of Experiments, Simulation, Systems Design, Key Competencies, Human Factors Considerations, and Program Monitoring.
At the end of the two-day course, the participants were given a document created under this project called the Systems Engineering Resource Catalog. This catalog lists and describes over 230 courses that are easily adoptable by existing professionals. With lists of weekend, evening, and online courses, existing engineers and other professionals are able to tailor continuing education around their work schedules to make this kind of secondary education a reality and increase the application of Systems Engineering across many industries. All courses and catalog materials that were provided are now available online.
