About
Organization: The San Luis Obispo Economic Vitality Corporation (SLOEVC) is a One Stop provider of business development resources. Its mission is to stimulate the economic vitality of San Luis Obispo County, generate jobs, increase investment in the community and promote local businesses. Its goals are defined within five areas: business startup, expansion, retention, and attraction; business finance; a venture capital network; a job network for spouses of workers relocating to the San Luis Obispo area; and business advocacy. It provides these services for individuals and businesses throughout San Luis Obispo County. SLOEVC is a partner on three WIRED projects, listed below. Tasks: Project 1.1 - Economic Innovation Toolkit: - Wrote a 39 page handbook that leads the reader through the process it takes to organize and hold a Capital Pitch Event in their community. The step-by-step document outlines one example of a way to do so. The process can be tailored to fit an organization’s own style and goals. The document can also be used as a resource for picking and choosing components; worksheets; and checklists, as necessary. The document was structured chronologically to help the reader understand the steps needed to plan and hold a Capital Pitch Event. The main categories are outlined below:
-Pre-planning
-Planning
-Holding Event
-Follow-Up
-Addendum containing sample documents, worksheets, and checklists.
Title: Holding a Venture Capital Pitching Event – Starting an Angel Investor Network
A second deliverable was provided - a 36 page study on San Luis Obispo and a demographic overview of the County. Included sections examine the supply of the workforce, demand side factors, and specific industrial sectors in the economy. The report suggests clusters in which the local WIB and its' Board and its community partners could invest in, with specific action plans for workforce interventions in those clusters.
Title: Understanding the Local Economy and Workforce Dynamics of San Luis Obispo County
The Venture Community event that SLOEVC coordinated was important in as it showed that an economic development entity who had not previously done so, could coordinate a successful event around technology and investment, using the Golden Capital framework and that the framework developed by GCN and Chabin is operative through their process. This validated the GCN/Chabin deliverable.
Project 1.3 - Inventory of Key Innovation Assets:- Identification and profiling of a minimum of 140 Innovation Assets (Federal and private Research and Development labs, military installations, college/university research centers and private companies). - Add the 140 profiles to Connectory.com. Design an economic development resource database tool (California Innovation Corridor Innovative Asset Portal) to house the 140 profiles, as a Corridor Portal. Project 3.1 - Workforce Analysis: - With partners, generate a minimum of 200 company responses to the project survey, and develop and publicize a final report of the survey results. - Develop strategies to address identified training and education gaps, and share strategies across the 9 regions and the entire Corridor.
