About
Organization: The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) was founded in order to attract, retain and grow business and jobs in the Los Angeles County region, as well as to identify trends and affect positive change for the local economy. It is led by a Board of Directors, composed of civic leaders and high-level executives of the region's leading public and private organizations, who are committed to playing a decisive role in shaping the region's economic future. LAEDC is a partner on four WIRED projects, listed below. Tasks: Project 1.1 - Economic Development Innovation Toolkit: - Six deliverables. Focus of project was to stimulate innovation network throughout Los Angeles County region.

Regional Business Assistance Network (RBAN) is a coalition of countywide government and non-profit business assistance providers that work via a referral system to maximize resources to attract, retain and grow businesses in the county. Through panel discussions and guest speakers and through development of the RBAN website, LAEDC has disseminated the "innovation" theme to the region's key business assistance providers.

LAEDC created a comprehensive, web-based, Innovation Resource Guide (IRG), which is a compilation of service providers, educational institutions, venture capital sources, and annual conferences dedicated to the support of businesses in the emerging technologies. In addition, the IRG includes local, state, and federal resources that can be of value to businesses not only in Los Angeles County but throughout the state of California.

Title: Communication Plan Implementation White Paper
LAEDC developed a comprehensive Communication Plan white paper highlighting the key assets of the most populous County in the United States, Los Angeles County. The information elements of the LAEDC Communication Plan incorporate both internal and external communication "tools." Through both internal and external resources, the LAEDC provides continuous, updated communication related to important business issues affecting the business climate within Los Angeles County. These resources also provide an avenue to celebrate important strategic benchmarks and positive events/changes occurring within the county's business community.
Title: Innovation Fact Sheets (See Project Page)
LAEDC created three innovation fact sheets focused on a) the high-tech industry, b) the aerospace industry, and c) biotechnology. These fact sheets are being utilized by the LAEDC and the World Trade Center Los Angeles and Long Beach locations on trade missions abroad to such countries as China and India among others, as a way to promote LA County as an innovation-oriented destination for businesses. The fact sheets will serve as a template for future high growth industry clusters, including those highlighted in LA County's First Ever Strategic Plan.
Project 1.3 - Inventory of Key Innovation Assets: - Identification and profiling of a minimum of 140 Innovation Assets (Federal and private Research and Development labs, military installations, college/university research centers and private companies). - Add the 140 profiles to Connectory.com. Design an economic development resource database tool (California Innovation Corridor Innovative Asset Portal) to house the 140 profiles, as a Corridor Portal.
Project 1.4 - Innovation-Based Entrepreneurial Ventures: - Entrepreneurial ventures demonstration project with entrepreneurial companies including Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II awardees to identify best practices in helping innovative companies to commercialize technology and create jobs. A two day conference event was designed, focused on entrepreneurs and technology businesses "pitching" to panels of Angel and VC investors. The two day event consisted of primer classes, several key note speakers, and six investor panels populated by 37 investors being pitched by 35 technology companies. Companies and panels represented 1 and 2) Emerging Technologies, 3) Software / IT, 4) Biotech / Pharma and Medical Devices, 5) Communications Technologies, 6) New Media / Web Internet Content. The evening concluded by the top 15 companies in California being recognized to receive the California Innovation Awards. Additioanlly produced for the event was a 20 minute video outlining California as the premier State for R&D and technology business and entrepreneurship. This was funded by BTH. A 41 page template was produced, outlining the processes and procedures needed to create an entrepreneurial conference. Event deliverable was the successful conference, the Video and the event template.

Project 3.1 - Workforce Analysis: - With partners, generate a minimum of 200 company responses to the project survey, and develop and publicize a final report of the survey results. - Develop strategies to address identified training and education gaps, and share strategies across the 9 regions and the entire Corridor.
Experience/core competencies:
Economic research, referrals to agencies that provide free and low-cost business assistance providers, industry cluster analysis, economic impact analysis, customized business resource identification & linkage (e.g., alternative financing, entrepreneurial training, regional business assistance networks)
Partnerships with other relevant organizations:
We have several active partnerships with numerous regional players and economic development stakeholders. Some of these relationships include regional economic development organizations that cover the South Bay, Gateway Cities, San Gabriel Valley, Antelope Valley, West Los Angeles, and Santa Clarita areas of Los Angeles County. The Greater Antelope Valley Economic Agency (GAVEA) is also funded under WIRED). The City of Los Angeles Workforce Investment Board (WIB) has also assisted us in meeting our deliverables on WIRED Goals. In addition, the LAEDC is working closely with California Manufacturing Technology Consulting (CMTC) which provide high value consulting services to California's high tech and traditional small and medium-size manufacturers to increase their competitive advantage through improved methods of management and manufacturing.
